MY BRITISH FAMILY

This project is looking at identity, specifically investigating British identity in our current multi-cultural times, where we were born and who we are, and questioning why should they be inextricably linked?

I have taken traditional formal portraits of various members of my family that were born in different parts of the old British Empire and family members whose parents were immigrants. I’ve overlaid these images with the flags of the countries of where themselves or their parents were from. These flags superimposed over their eyes resemble tribal markings and tattoos and make it easy to identify their ancestral heritage.

It is generally agreed that although we can see through the eyes of our mixed heritage, we still do not have a voice, as represented by the flags positioned over the mouths, it’s as if we have been gagged! ©2019

My families history has been featured as part of an Exhibition, By The Cut Of Their Cloth, on the wonderful Mixed Museum Website:
